The idea behind the painting:

The person on the right panel is a painter who’s creating his artwork on the left panel. That’s basically it.

Of course I painted it with both panels joined together and then separated and framed:

Filling The Emptiness

“The Witch Doctor”

Mixed Media, 4′ x 4′.

This is the piece I submitted to the “Black & White Show”.

The original title was “The Shaman” since the painting is about a Shaman performing a healing. The feather represent the disease.
When I was in the Art School in Buenos Aires years ago, I was very interested in Precolumbian Art.
We did extensive reaserch on the subject and my group’s thesis was specifically about Precolumbian Cultures of Northwest Argentina.
Sadly I don’t have my notes, so all I know now is what I can remember, but it is a very interesting subject.

” Shamanism is an anthropological term referencing a range of beliefs and practices regarding communication with the spiritual world. A practitioner of shamanism is known as a shaman.
Shamanism encompasses the belief that shamans are intermediaries or messengers between the human world and the spirit worlds. Shamans are said to treat ailments/illness by mending the soul. Alleviating traumas affecting the soul/spirit restores the physical body of the individual to balance and wholeness. The shaman also enters supernatural realms or dimensions to obtain solutions to problems afflicting the community. Shamans may visit other worlds/dimensions to bring guidance to misguided souls and to ameliorate illnesses of the human soul caused by foreign elements. The shaman operates primarily within the spiritual world, which in turn affects the human world. The restoration of balance results in the elimination of the ailment.”

I was listening to “Father to son” by Queen, my very first favorite band (I was 11 years old and I was wearing an old Queen shirt) when I started this painting.
So why not include it in the “Inspired by a song” category.

Just thinking

This was a project from the time I was in the art school.
I was trying to create a portrait of a person without the person (without a model).
I think that drawing or painting from a model is good exercise, it lets you understand proportions, light and shade, skin tones, etc.
On the other hand when you create something just using your imagination the result will be unique.
You will ask yourself why this color, why these shapes, why that posture, gesture, position, what’s wrong with me, and there will be no right answer.
